Q) What is the difference between liposuction and liposculpture?
A)They are really two words for the same procedure.
Q) What is Power-assisted liposuction?
A) Traditional liposuction removes fat by forcefully breaking it up with a cannula before the evacuation phase. A Power-assisted machine vibrates back and forth and aids in the removal of the fat with less force. Dr. Trott has found that by using this newer technology she is able to remove more fat in less time and with less blood loss. In addition, because she is not working so hard to "get the fat out" she can concentrate on the more artistic sculpting and shaping aspects of the procedure.
Q) What is Ultrasound-assisted liposuction?
A) Ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL) uses an ultrasonic probe to liquefy the fat cells. It is indicated for very fibrous tissue such as male gynecomastia (enlarged breasts) or areas that need to be redone.
Q)What is the tumescent technique?
A) To "tumesce" means to inject fluid. All liposuction is done in a wet environment—that is, fluid is injected before fat is removed. The fluid commonly contains adrenaline, which decreases blood loss, and a local anesthetic. Therefore, all liposuction today is done with some "tumescent" fluid. Most board-certified plastic surgeons today use what is called the "superwet" technique, where approximately one-and-a-half to twice the amount of fluid is injected when compared to the total amount aspirated.
Q) Is five liters the limit of fat that can be removed?
A) The Lipoplasty Task Force has determined that in an outpatient setting, the amount of total aspirate should not exceed five liters, however this is patient dependent and may be even less in some individuals.
Q) If I have liposculpture (liposuction) and then gain weight will it come back in other places?
A)As long as you maintain a healthy diet and exercise regimen your body will adjust and you should not gain any weight back. However, if you do not take care of your new body, you may gain some weight back. First it will try to go to the areas where you normally store it, (which are usually the areas that have been suctioned) and then it will go elsewhere. We gain weight by our existing fat cells getting bigger, not by adding fat cells.
Q) What will my down time be after liposculpture (liposuction)?
A) Generally expect to take a week off work and don’t make any big plans for a couple of weeks. There will be swelling and bruising that may last a few weeks (depending on the volume removed). You will wear a postoperative compression garment for four to six weeks postoperatively.
Q) Will liposculpture (liposuction) help my cellulite?
A) As a rule, cellulite does not usually improve with liposculpture (liposuction) and it can actually get worse. However, Dr. Trott has had patients who claim that it got better after the procedure.
Q) How big are the scars and where will they be?
A) The scars are approximately .5 to 1 cm. Dr. Trott uses small cannulas and hides the scars in areas that will be covered by your bathing suit or underwear, or in natural skin creases.
Q) How much weight will I lose?
A) Fat does not weigh very much, so even with a more extensive liposuction you may only lose a few pounds—but it will be in all the right places! What you will find is that your body contour and proportions will be improved so that clothes will look much better, and you will probably drop clothing sizes.
